Academic Federal Credit Union Privacy Notice

Academic Federal Credit Union is owned by its members. It is governed by a Board of Directors that you elect. You can be confident that your financial privacy is a top priority of this institution. This privacy notice describes our policy and practices about your personal information.

AFCU is committed to providing you with products and services to meet your financial needs.

This sometimes requires that we share information about you among the office staff and others. Access to members’ information will be reasonably limited to those employees who have a business reason for such access.

Sometimes we enter into joint marketing agreements with other companies that provide financial and other services, through us, to you. We may share information that we collected (see below) with these companies.

In order to protect our members’ privacy, we only work with companies that agree to maintain strong confidentiality protections and we limit the use of information we provide. We do not permit these companies to see or transmit to third parties the information we provide to them.

We collect nonpublic personal information about you from the following sources:

  • Information we receive from you on applications or other forms,
  • Information about your transactions with us,
  • Information we receive from a consumer reporting agency, and
  • Information obtained when verifying the information you provide on an application or other forms. This may be obtained from your current or past employer, or from other institutions where you conduct financial business.

The Confidentiality of Your Nonpublic Personal Information

We restrict access to nonpublic personal information about you to those employees who need to know that information to provide products or services to you. We maintain physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards that comply with federal regulations to guard your nonpublic personal information.

Nonpublic Personal Information for Current and Former Members and Nonaffiliated Third Parties

Since we value our member relationship with you, we will not disclose your nonpublic personal information to third parties, except as permitted by law. We do not disclose nonpublic personal information about former members.

Authorized Sharing – Joint Marketing

We may disclose the following information to other financial institutions with which we have joint marketing agreements:

  • Nonpublic personal information we receive from you on an application or other form, such as your name, address and Social Security number.
  • Nonpublic personal information about your transactions with us, such as type of your accounts.

Federal law allows us to share the information above with other financial institutions with which we have joint marketing agreements. You may opt out of the disclosure of this information via online banking or by reaching out to us via telephone. We may also disclose nonpublic personal information about you to nonaffiliated third parties as permitted by law.

The types of businesses with whom we may share nonpublic personal information includes providers of financial services (such as insurance agents) and companies offering non-financial services (such as publishers).
