Academic co-sponsors Sarah Lawrence College's Science Student Research Collaboration

The Science Student Research Collaboration is a partnership between Sarah Lawrence College and the Yonkers Public Schools.  Each summer a group of about 10 Yonkers high school students is selected by their teachers to participate in a weeklong intensive research experience at Sarah Lawrence.  Topics covered include ecology, computer science and robotics, molecular biology, physical and organic chemistry, and physics.  The experience is unique in that the students not only get to do hands-on research in the laboratory, but also learn how to frame their own research questions and devise experiments to examine them.  They are learning not only sophisticated laboratory skills but the “art of science.”  They work alongside and are mentored by Sarah Lawrence undergraduates, and receive individualized instruction from full Sarah Lawrence faculty.  It is an eye-opening experience for a group of very talented and ambitious high school students who will be the researchers of tomorrow.

“Sarah Lawrence College is enormously pleased to be able to offer Yonkers public high school students the opportunity to do college-level research in fields such as molecular biology, physical chemistry, and computer science, alongside Sarah Lawrence undergraduates who help to mentor them.  For many of these budding scientists, the weeklong experience is enough to give them the boost they need to pursue college studies and careers in STEM fields.  We are also grateful to the Academic Federal Credit Union for making it possible to designate a Project SEED student who will spend the full summer working in our chemistry laboratory.”

- Jerrilynn Dodds, Dean of Sarah Lawrence College
